Iloilo City, Philippines – In a landmark achievement that has brought pride to the Visayan region and the entire country, the University of San Agustin-College of Law emerged victorious at the prestigious International Moot Court Competition held in The Hague, Netherlands.
The competition, which saw participation from over 40 top law schools across the globe, revolved around complex international law issues, particularly on humanitarian law and international criminal justice. The San Agustin team bested finalists from the University of Tokyo and King's College London in a riveting championship round.
Stellar Performance on the Global StageThe team, composed of Maria Eliza Fernandez, James Benedict Rosales, Andrea Mae Valdez, and Ralph Andre Ilano, impressed the panel of international legal experts with their sharp legal arguments, mastery of jurisprudence, and exceptional courtroom demeanor.
“This victory is a testament to the world-class legal education that regional schools like ours can provide,” said Atty. Francis Jude Gonzales, Dean of the College of Law. “Our students not only showcased their legal acumen but also represented Filipino excellence on a global platform.”
Journey to the TopBefore making it to the global stage, the team underwent rigorous training and internal elimination rounds. They clinched the national title in the Philippine National Rounds of the moot court earlier this year, earning the right to represent the country in the international competition.
The moot problem focused on war crimes and state responsibility, challenging participants to argue as both applicant and respondent before a panel simulating the International Court of Justice.
Accolades and RecognitionApart from bagging the championship trophy, Maria Eliza Fernandez was awarded Best Oralist in the finals, while the team’s memorials were ranked in the Top 3 Written Submissions.
The University of San Agustin is planning a formal homecoming ceremony to honor the students and their coaches, recognizing the win as a historical milestone for the institution.
