Iloilo City, Philippines – The University of San Agustin’s (USA) Department of Political Science successfully hosted a webinar on the West Philippine Sea dispute, bringing together experts, diplomats, and academics to discuss the complex geopolitical tensions in the region. The event, held on April 22, 2024, aimed to provide a platform for thoughtful discourse on the ongoing territorial conflict and its implications for Philippine sovereignty and regional stability.
Insights from Key ExpertsThe webinar featured a series of presentations from Dr. Renato de la Cruz, a prominent international relations expert, and Ambassador Maria Teresa R. Morente, who has extensive experience in maritime diplomacy. The speakers addressed key issues surrounding the dispute, focusing on the Philippine-China relations, the 2016 Arbitral Ruling, and the role of ASEAN in mitigating tensions.
“Understanding the West Philippine Sea dispute is crucial, not only for policymakers but for all Filipinos,” Dr. de la Cruz explained. “This is a matter of national interest that has far-reaching consequences for our economic, security, and diplomatic relations.”
The Role of Young LeadersIn a notable part of the webinar, the floor was opened for undergraduate and graduate Political Science students to engage in a moderated Q&A, allowing them to express their views and concerns. Many students raised questions about the role of the United States and regional allies in supporting the Philippines, while others asked about the impact of the dispute on international trade and freedom of navigation.
“Being able to discuss these issues with such esteemed experts gives us the perspective we need as future leaders in the field of political science,” said Alvin Reyes, a third-year student at the USA College of Political Science. “It’s vital that we stay informed on such critical matters.”
A Step Toward Promoting AwarenessThe Department of Political Science plans to continue organizing similar webinars and forums to foster deeper understanding of critical global issues. The event was well-received by attendees, with many highlighting the importance of addressing maritime security and the future of the West Philippine Sea in both local and international contexts.
“The dispute over the West Philippine Sea is one of the most important issues facing our country today,” said Dr. Eduardo Torres, Chair of the Department of Political Science. “Through discussions like these, we hope to cultivate informed citizens who can contribute meaningfully to the ongoing dialogue.
