Iloilo Beefs Up River Replenishment Program

Cody M. Brown

Iloilo City, Philippines – In a bid to restore the ecological balance and improve water quality, Iloilo City has announced an expanded initiative to enhance its River Replenishment Program, aimed at rehabilitating the Iloilo River and its surrounding ecosystem.

The program, which was initially launched several years ago, seeks to address the growing environmental concerns surrounding the river, particularly issues related to waste management, water pollution, and the loss of aquatic biodiversity. The city's Local Government Unit (LGU), in collaboration with local stakeholders, environmental groups, and citizens, has committed to taking more comprehensive and proactive measures to preserve and protect this vital water resource.

Expanding Restoration Efforts

Under the newly revamped program, additional cleanup drives, tree planting activities, and awareness campaigns will be conducted along the Iloilo River and its tributaries. The city government is also working on installing more efficient wastewater treatment plants and improving the management of riverfront areas to prevent further contamination.

“We are deeply committed to restoring the health of the Iloilo River,” said Mayor Jerry Treñas. “This river is not only an important part of our city’s history but also plays a crucial role in the livelihoods of many residents. We’re focused on ensuring that it remains clean, sustainable, and a source of pride for Ilonggos.”

Collaborative Effort

The Iloilo River Replenishment Program is a collaborative effort that involves various government agencies, including the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), local NGOs, and the private sector. Together, they are developing strategies to address both short-term and long-term environmental challenges.

The program also emphasizes the importance of community participation, with local residents being encouraged to take part in the river’s restoration. “Sustainable change will only happen if the community is actively involved in taking care of our environment,” added Councilor Rodel P. Sañosa, chair of the city’s Environmental Committee.

Promoting Eco-Tourism and Public Awareness

In addition to its ecological goals, the expanded program aims to turn the Iloilo River into an eco-tourism hub, promoting boat tours, riverwalks, and other recreational activities that highlight the natural beauty of the area. The city plans to further improve riverbanks, build more parks, and create safe spaces for residents and tourists alike to enjoy the river while raising awareness about environmental conservation.

The Path Ahead

As part of the city’s long-term vision for a cleaner and greener Iloilo, the River Replenishment Program will continue to monitor progress and introduce new projects that will further contribute to the rehabilitation of the river system. By working together, the city hopes to create a thriving, sustainable environment that benefits both people and wildlife.
