Manila, Philippines – The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) has announced its projection of 65 million voters for the upcoming 2022 Philippine national elections, reflecting a significant increase in voter registration despite the challenges posed by the ongoing pandemic.

COMELEC Chairman Sherman C. Lasaca shared that the figure includes both new voters and those who have re-registered after failing to vote in previous elections. The projected number marks a critical milestone in ensuring the country's democratic process remains robust and inclusive.

Voter Registration Push

The surge in voter numbers comes after the COMELEC’s extended voter registration period in 2021, allowing more time for Filipinos to sign up. With increased efforts to reach remote and underserved areas, the commission has worked closely with local government units and community organizations to ensure all eligible citizens are registered.

“We are excited to see such an overwhelming response from the Filipino people,” said Chairman Lasaca. “It demonstrates the eagerness of Filipinos to participate in our democratic process and have a say in the future of our nation.”

Focus on Accessibility and Safety

To adapt to the health protocols brought about by the pandemic, the COMELEC has implemented online registration services and mobile registration units in areas where travel is difficult. These efforts have helped make the process more accessible for individuals with limited mobility or those living in geographically isolated communities.

Additionally, the COMELEC has ensured that polling precincts will follow strict health and safety guidelines during the elections to ensure the safety of voters, election workers, and other participants.

A Call for Voter Education

As part of its voter education campaign, the COMELEC has launched various initiatives aimed at informing voters about the electoral process, their rights, and how to avoid common election-related issues. The commission emphasized that educating voters is crucial to ensuring a smooth and fair election.

“With more voters participating, it’s important that they are well-informed about their roles and responsibilities. We want every Filipino to make their vote count,” said **COMELEC Commissioner Elena S. Tan.

Looking Ahead

With less than a year before the elections, the COMELEC is ramping up its preparations to ensure that the 2022 polls will be fair, free, and accessible to all Filipinos. The 65 million voter projection marks a significant step towards ensuring the country’s democratic rights are upheld, even in the face of adversity.
