City Councilor Pushes Uniform Trike Fare

Thelma C. Johnson

Iloilo City, PhilippinesCity Councilor Rafael “Rafi” Villanueva has proposed a new ordinance that seeks to implement a uniform fare system for tricycles across Iloilo City, aiming to create a more equitable and standardized pricing structure for both passengers and drivers.

Under the proposed ordinance, all tricycle operators would be required to adhere to a fixed fare for short, medium, and long-distance rides within the city. This initiative is expected to bring about transparency in fare rates, prevent overcharging, and ensure fair pricing for commuters while maintaining a sustainable livelihood for drivers.

Aiming for Fairness and Consistency

Currently, tricycle fares vary depending on the area, operator, and even the time of day. Councilor Villanueva’s push for a uniform tricycle fare is designed to eliminate inconsistencies and provide passengers with a more predictable and affordable transportation option.

“This measure is about creating fairness for everyone involved. Passengers will benefit from clear and consistent pricing, while drivers will no longer face the pressure of negotiating fares,” Villanueva explained. “This will also help strengthen the trust between drivers and passengers.”

Support from the Public and Stakeholders

The proposal has garnered positive feedback from the local community, including various transport groups and commuter organizations. Tricycle drivers, too, have expressed support, noting that a standardized fare system will reduce conflicts and improve overall efficiency in their operations.

“The current system of haggling and uncertainty often leads to misunderstandings. A fixed fare would give us clarity and a better sense of security,” said Antonio Reyes, a tricycle driver and member of the Iloilo Tricycle Operators and Drivers Association (ITODA).

The Path Ahead

Councilor Villanueva has already presented the ordinance in the city council, and if passed, it will be implemented gradually with consultation from both tricycle operators and the commuting public. The city will also work on creating a proper monitoring system to ensure compliance with the new fare structure.
